My mother had dreams that came true. I'm not talking figureatively in a reach-for-the-stars kind of way. At times in her life she had clairvoyant dreams about things that came to pass. I've never had them; the family rumor is that these gifts skip a generation. But I had a dream this weekend that spooked me. If you are the sort to belive in premonistions, this would look a lot like one.

"It turns out that if you die in a dream you don't actually die in real life," I told Jeff on Sunday. "I died this morning in a dream and I seem to be fine. Shaken up, but okay."

In the dream, I was driving in a car and weaving in and out of traffic. Suddenly, a car appeared in the lane in front of me and I hit it, head on. The next thing I knew, I was enveloped in a cloud of white thinking, "Am I dead? I must be dead - I hit them too fast. Now what?" Then I woke up with a start.

My dreams in recent years haven't been very vivid. This was the first dream I can remember in a very long time. I figured it was symboloic of the uncertainty I'm facing in a lot of things right now, and put it out of my mind. I forgot about it completely until I heard that my cousin, Frankie, was in a major car accident yesterday. She is a postal carrier and was deliving mail on a rural route yesterday when a Dodge Ram Truck hit her car head on.

She didn't die, though. She was envoloped in a cloud of white when her airbag deployed, and that cloud saved her life. Her limbs are broken and she is serious condition in a hospital in East Texas, but her injuries are not fatal. She is a little banged up, but they say she's going to be okay.

My point is, I can no longer claim that I've debunked that old wives' tale about what happens when you die in a dream. I've heard someone say that old wives get a bad rap and that they actually are very wise. If they were as stupid as everyone claims, they would have died young. I thought I died in a dream, but I didn't. It turns out my dream car was equiped with airbags. I'm glad of this, for my sake and for Frankie's, too.

Are you sure her airbag deployed? What was it that broke her ribs and nearly crushed her Aorta?

With that kind of collision, it should have. An airbag goes off with a tremendous force - enough to decapitate a short person who is sitting too close to the steering wheel and to kill a small child in the front seat (also by decapitation). Assuming they aren't the thing that kills you, they are supposed to keep you from getting killed by the impact of the collision. They do not keep you from getting hurt entirely. From what you described, it sounds like she may have sustained injuries from the side of the car that was taken out, not just from the frontal impact.

I'm still pretty sure I didn't actually die in that dream. It only felt like I was dying.

She will be okay. I'm sure she's in for a lot of physical thearapy (not fun) and won't be back to work for a long time, though.

I don't recall the last time I had a nightmare. I think I'll pay closer attention to the next one.

How scary! I'm glad the Frankie is "okay." Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

I suddently have a lot more respect for rural postal workers. They aren't delivering mail in subdivisions where the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour. Instread, they are makeing frequent stops on dirt roads and rural highways where rednecks like to see how fast they get their pickup trucks to go (Yeeha!).

I'll keep my office jobs, thank you.

Amazing!!! How very lucky for your cousin! And that's a little scary (for you) that you had a slightly foreseeing dream.

I was walking around the next day wondering if it meant I needed to be extra careful on the road. Turns out I should have been warning my kinfolk. :P

Wow. I'm glad you are ok and that frankie is going to recover.

That airbag sure is a trip..2 years ago I was in a head on wreck, and while it kept me from flying thru the windshield, it did a number on my chest. It looked like mike tyson had a go at me lol

Yeah, she's pretty busted up. They may save your life, but they don't guarantee that you're going to walk away and not be in any pain. Even if you don't get injured your arms grip that steering wheel so hard before the impact that you feel it in your neck and shoulders for a week later. :P

She'll live - no head trauma (thank God) and all of her organs are in working (if bruised) order, but she's going to be in a lot of pain for awhile to come.
