An old man stood next to the Southwest corner of the stoplight this morning. His dark face looked faded out, like an image in a 30-year-old photograph that the color had begun to break down in. His teeth and the whites of his eyes looked a pale yellow. Even the color in his closed seemed to be breaking down, like the entire man was fading to sepia.

He looked strait ahead into the distance, with a gaze that either was taking in everything for 100 miles or else belonged to a blind man and was taking in nothing at all. I could not tell which. Then, he turned his head and made eye contact with me. The light turned green and I took off, haunted.

I wondered if he could see the Ferris wheel. I suspected he may have just gotten off the ride and wandered in the wrong direction, crossing the street instead of taking off down the midway like he was supposed to.
