Monday - That's My Boy

Today on my drive into work, I was thinking about what my son's daycare teacher told me when I picked him up on Friday.

"He keeping taking out his pee-pee and showing it to the little girls," she said.

I put my hand on my forehead and tried to hide behind it.

"Oh, God, I'm sorry. He's just started showing it off. I'm sorry." I don't know why I was so mortified -- this woman works with toddlers and this can't be anything she hasn't seen before.

"I just ask him to put it away and pull up his pants, and he usually does," I said helpfully. This is what he does for me, at least. I had no idea what he does in front of potential girlfriends.

"Oh, don't worry about it. We get him dressed again and he's fine. I'll pick him up and hold him and talk to him about it, and he just wants to cuddle. He's very sweet. I just thought you should know what he's been up to."

"Thanks. I mean, I'm sorry. It's just something he's, you know, going through right now."

She said she understood.

I mulled over what she had described: my son walking up to a group of girls holding the glory of his masculinity in his hand, his demeanor saying, "Hey, look at this! Isn't this thing awesome? Okay, now that you've seen it, somebody hold me."

At not quite 2 years old, I know this is normal, if not socially acceptable, behavior. If he's still at it as a teenager, I'll have to have a talk with him.

Jeff, was dismayed, then pragmatic about it.

"Our baby is a pervert," he groaned.

"Yeah, but he's a sweet pervert," I said, "He likes to cuddle afterward."

"At least he's showing it off to little girls," Jeff mused, "I guess this means there's a good chance we'll have grandchildren some day."

Well, yes, there is that. And here I couldn't find the bright side to this story.

I guess that will a concern if he continues to like his girls in multiples. I'm going to try real hard not to think about that now, thank you...

uh...bright side=normally developing child, who is discovering his body. It's a teachable moment....in so many ways. :)

When my son was 6 they drew gingerbread men and woman at the YMCA afterschool program. He drew them anatomocally correct. The teacher pulled me aside and asked if tehre was any inappropriate touch or nudity at home. I said, "Um...you asked my 6 year old to draw a man and a woman. If he hadn't drawn body parst, THEN I would be concerned. "

Typos? What typos? My God, if it weren't for spell check, no one would able to understand a word I write. I'm a huge proponent of creative spelling.

Yes, he is normal, and I'm not ungrateful. It's just a matter of teaching him to keep it put away during school hours, and visits with the grandparents, and trips to the grocery store...etc. He's just very impressed with this new toy he's discovered (bonus - sometimes it even squirts water!) and eager to show it off. Maybe he's notice during diaper changing time that the little girls don't seem to have one, and that's why he's offering to share...

The Montessori school my daughter went to had open doors on all of the bathrooms. It wasn't anything to see a 3-4 year-old boy wander out of the bathroom looking for a helping hand with his clothes. I talked to a teacher about it, and they said "Oh, yeah, we try to get them to put their clothes on in the bathroom." I was like "NAKED BOYS! IN THE HALL!" Even my daughter's attitude was something along the lines of "SO?"

As long as they stop somewhere between 2 and 18 I think it's ok.

I'm his mom, that's my job. Telling stories and showing off naked baby pictures of him to his prom date. ^_^

Hopefully, he will recover and start talking to me again by the time he's 30.

If he's taking it out and showing it in public, it's a perverted live sex show that needs to be shut down by the authorities (his parents or his teacher, in this case). ;P

Oh my goodness. That is really funny! Chandler doesn't show off his goodies...just his tushie. Come to think of it, though, he's only mooned his family members...no one at school or daycare. I guess that's good, right?

I think that mooning is a less serious offense than flashing, though both fall under the Public Lewdness statutes if they continue doing it into adulthood (God forbid).
