Today on the drive into work, I was thinking about homemade soup. If you have never made soup from scratch and have only eaten it from a can, my advice to you is to keep eating it from a can. Making soup from scratch is easy and only takes about half an hour, but it will mess up your life. Canned soup will no longer taste any good to you.

There will be days that you think soup would be nice, but you will feel too lazy to make it. You will take a can of soup out of the pantry and look at the label but remember how it doesn't taste anything like fresh soup does. You will discover that in spite of this, you still don't feel like making real soup. You will think about getting dressed and going some place that sells fresh soup, but realize that if you are too lazy to make soup, you are probably too lazy to leave the house.

You will end up just eating a sandwich, and not enjoying it very much.

Houston has a good-sized Asian community (about 8% of the population, last I checked) and in parts of town there is a Pho restaurant on every corner. I am ashamed to say that I haven't tried any of them, though. Is it good?

I'm home with a sick husband and a sick baby (if I'd know the husband would be home sick, I would have let him pick up the baby from daycare instead of driving an hour to work only to turn around and drive an hour back home). I have homemade beef vegetable soup and chick noodle soup on the stove right now.

Pho is my favorite soup when I am sick. Its a clear asian flavored (like a lil star anise) mild broth with either egg or rice noodles and your choice of meat. You add fresh basil and bean sprouts and possibly pepper to flavor. If you like fresh basil you will love it.

It's pathetic, really. I went for 2 years without eating soup for this very reason.

So very true.

I love soup, but the actual prospect of making it myself is just yeah not on a list of priorities considering I cook for one.

So canned soup it is or in this case out of a packet. .although we do have nice soup for some brands, its just not the same.

I do a few soups, but my kids and I are more about the heavier meals most of the time. My potato soup will fill a soul up though!

Canned soup just tastes like a mouthful of salt to me these days...

boxed organic soups are okay, but you're right, mom's homemade chicken soup with the giant carrots and potatoes in it will ruin any red-blooded canned soup-eater in two slurps. My favorite recipe is actually cold cucumber soup, which I've never seen in a can, so the coast is clear...*looks over shoulder*
