Today on my drive into work, I was thinking about a conversation my husband and I had last night. He had spent the afternoon with his oldest son, my stepson Matthew, who will turn 17 this April.

"If I want to attract women," he told me, "I just need to take Matt with me wherever I go."

Because of Jeff's work schedule, he sees Matt on days that I am working, usually in an after-school outing. I haven't seen my step-son since December 2004, which sadly is also the last time he saw his baby brother. He's a good kid and I have always gotten along with him, though I can't exactly say the same for his mother.

As he nears adulthood, he is blossoming into a nice-looking young man. He handsome and fast approaching 6 feet tall, wearing that charming awkwardness that is universal among all teen-aged boys trying to balance themselves between childhood and adulthood.

Jeff and Matt had gone to a restaurant for dinner at what Jeff described as "a kind of Hooter's knockoff" sort of place (Matt chose it). The waitresses were all young and pretty and wore tight little t-shirts and shorts.

"I could barely talk to him," Jeff said, "The little waitress must have checked on us 40 or 50 times. 'Do you need anything?' over and over and over. And she wasn't talking to me. Every time she came over, she was looking at Matt. I don't think she saw me at all." Jeff is over 40, and therefore invisible to teen-aged waitresses.

"Was he impressed with the attention?" I asked.

"He was playing it cool, acting all nonchalant like he didn't care. It was funny."

"Women fawning all over him, and it's just his cross to bear, huh?"

"Exactly."

"Poor baby."

"If I ever want to pick up women, I guess I just have to take him with me and they'll come running," he said with a devilish grin, and tilted his head toward the nursery where our baby son lay sleeping "Of course, I can use the little one for that, too."

I raised my eyebrows at him and ask, "And what exactly would you do with these women if you were picked them up?" Our relationship is secure enough that we can joke like this; neither one of us has the time or the inclination to have an affair.

"I would check to see if they weren't secretly talking frogs," he said, and he gave me a kiss.

"Just what I suspected," I told him and kissed him back, "I knew you still wanted one of those things!"
