Tuesday - Firemen Can Cause Accidents
Jan. 24th, 2006 12:34 pmToday on my drive into work, I was thinking about my drive home last night. At one point on the highway that connects the big city I work in to the small town where I live, traffic slowed to a crawl because fire trucks and police cars lined the shoulder and the middle turning lane. There had to be a dozen fire trucks with their lights flashing and at least as many police cars.
Their sirens were silent. I could see no fire or accident, just men in uniforms milling about and talking to each other. The fire engines were so big towering above my small car and their lights so colorful against the black of the recently fallen night, it felt like I was driving down the midway to a carnival.
At one point I almost rear ended the car in front of me because one of the firemen was young and nice looking and the car ahead of me slowed to a stop as I was craning my neck to take in the sight of him. Since we just got my car fixed from the last time I ran into someone, I can imagine having to explain this one to my husband.
"It wasn't my fault," I would say, "he was really adorable in his fireman suit, with his big black boots and his suspenders and his tight little fireman t-shirt. How could I pay attention to the road with him just standing there next to it?"
Somehow, I don't think this would have gone over too well.
