Tuesday - Grim Greeting
Dec. 27th, 2005 10:36 amToday on the drive into work, I glanced at the Carney to see what he was up to as I sped by him. He was busy and didn't see me or wave. He worked through the holiday, as he does every year. For some people I know personally, he stopped the ride for just a second to give them a taste, and then started it again. My brother-in-law and the father of a friend of mine both had heart attacks on Christmas Eve and spent Christmas day in ICU.
Christmas Eve evening, when I returned home from finishing my last-minute Christmas shopping, I picked up the phone when it rang from my brother-in-law's number. It was his wife, Rosie. Rosie (or Rosewitha, if you want to be formal) has lived in the US for a good 30 years, but she is German and still talks with a heavy German accent.
"Hullo, Regina? Dis is Rosie. How you doin?" she began.
"Fine, and you?" I asked her, curious. She doesn't usually phone to chat.
"Well, better. See, has Jeff checked his cell phone yet?"
I told her that Jeff (who works both nights and weekends) was still asleep, and would wake in about an hour.
"Well, OK, der's a real scary message on his cell phone an' I jus want him to know dat everyting is OK now. See, Russ had a heart attack dis morning and he's in da hospital."
"Oh my God."
"He felt deze ches pains and he knew what it wuz and he drove himself to de hospital, which wuz jus stupid, but what you gonna do?"
"Oh my God! He made it there OK, though?"
"Yeah. He made it jus in time. Dey did dat ting wid da balloon, what do call dat?"
"An angioplasty?"
"Yeah, one of doze. He's in ICU now but day gonna send him home in de next day or two, so nobody worry, OK? I jus wanted Jeff to know dat he's fine."
"When he wakes up, I'll have him call you. Are you OK?" I knew that waking Jeff up and telling him wouldn't accomplish anything. He is very hard to wake up and it would be another hour before he was sure he wasn't dreaming.
"You don't half to half him call me. I'm OK. I jus had a scare, you know? We jus gotta stop smokin so much and eatin so much beef. All dat is catchin up wid him, and it's not good. We both gotta be better. I'm OK. So's Russ. Dey gonna send him home soon, maybe tomorrow even."
Jeff did call her and stopped by to see her and his brother on the way into work. His brother gets out of the hospital today and we will pay them a visit this evening and drop off their Christmas presents.
Merry Christmas from the Grim Reaper. Fortunately, he just sent a card to their house this year instead of dropping by for a visit.
I've been reading my Friends page, and I know that everyone wasn't so lucky.

Peace, Love and comfort, to all who need it. Here's to a new year with less tears than this last one had, and more laughter.
