Driving into work this morning, I was thinking about mortality. I know who the wheel is slowing down for now. I noticed it still slowing as I drove past it today.
Life has made me wise to the fact that there is nothing I can say that will make this better. No brilliant insight, no comment that will ease the pain and put it into perspective.
But you can't say nothing. The trick is to keep it simple. When the phone rings and you hear the tearful voice on the other end, you have to say something.
"No, it's not fair. Yes, I'll pray for you. You'll get through this. Hang in there. I love you."
Even if you are not the sort to mention love often, this is a good time to bring it up. I remember that much. I remember those being the only words that helped at all.
For what my love is worth, I'll send it out and hope it helps.
