Sweet Pea was sitting in the bathtub, lounging with his back against the edge and his knees pressed up against the side next to the wall. He is still small enough that this is comfortable for him.

“What if I could make girls’ clothes invisible?” he asked. “That would be embarrassing for them, wouldn’t it?”

”Just the girls clothes?” I asked.

“Yeah because I want to see what they look like.” He is 6, and already wants to know what girls look like naked. He must have already forgotten the last summer, when his babysitter’s daughter who is 10 months his senior, walked out of the bathroom in the all-together as I was standing at the door talking to her mother. Five year olds are not modest. At the time, he didn’t seem to pay her any attention.

“Why do you want to see what they look like?”

“Because. I just want to know. I want to know what their private parts look like.”

“But their private parts are private, silly. That’s why they’re called private.”

I think he is mainly curious at this point about how girls can pee without a penis. That is still a puzzle to him, even though I tried to explain to him that we can and do pee just fine. A pee-nis is for peeing, he knows this much. Yet half the world pees without one. Weird.

“I think if you turned all of the girls clothes invisible, they would say, Hey! You! Turn my clothes back to visible right now! Or I’m gonna get you!

He scowled. “If she said she was gonna get me, I would tell her that until she stopped saying that, I wasn’t gonna make her clothes the right color again. They would stay invisible.”

I walked out of the bathroom and told my husband about his son’s ambition to turn girls’ clothes invisible. He raised his eyebrows.

“Wow. That’s kind of disturbing.” He thought for a moment. “But I remember being curious at his age about what girls looked like. I just wanted to know. And at least he’s plotting to turn the girls’ clothes invisible, and not the boys.”

“He knows what the boys have: he’s got the same stuff himself. Girls are a mystery.”

“I’m glad he’s interested in girls, anyway.”

“Sure. I guess this means we have a shot at grandchildren some day.”

“Probably more than we want, sooner than we want them, at the rate he’s going.”

“Maybe we need to schedule that talk a little earlier than we planned.”

“Sounds like a plan. But let’s get him out of the tub for now.”

So we did, and he dressed himself in jammies that were not invisible. But I can’t help but think that tomorrow at school he will be undressing girls with his eyes…or at least plotting to turn their clothes invisible with some sort of invisibility ray gun he might create.

Perhaps we should limit how much Phineas and Ferb he is allowed to watch on Disney Channel. It seems to be giving him ideas.
