“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I’ve got something to tell you.”

I turn down the car radio so I can hear him from the back seat. At 5, his voice is still small and soft enough that I can’t always understand what he’s trying to say.

“What?”

“Light houses don’t have people anymore. They’re controlled by computers.”

“What doesn’t have people anymore?”

“Lighthouses! They don’t have people anymore! They’re controlled by computers!”

“Umh…okay.”

“Did you know that?”

“No.”

“Well, it’s true.”

He has never even seen the ocean before. The only lighthouse he has ever seen is the pretend one that is part of a seafood restaurant close to us. I also know he can’t read yet, so it’s not like he’s been reading up on lighthouses.

“Did your father tell you that?”

“Yes. He did.”

“Then I’ll take your word for it.”

“Okay. Good. I just wanted you to know.”

And that was all he had to say on the matter.

I don't know how I've survived this long without knowing that lighthouses are now unmanned. It sure does make them less romantic, doesn't it?

A bit, but now you know! Although I think robot lighthouses are kind of neat, personally :)

Yeah, but they lose that whole "Old Spice Commercial" appeal with robots in them.

A very important PSA, indeed! These are American JOBS, people!!!

Srsly, I dread the day Buddy learns about the demise of the caboose.

Sweet Pea has books and movies that have told him that Pluto is the smallest planet, and he's very proud of knowing that fact.

I haven't had the heart to tell him about Pluto's demotion.

What happened to your reply? Did you delete it? I was gonna say, I'm pretty bummed about Pluto, myself. I mean, what do Astronomers expect the Very Educated Mothers of the world to serve their kids, now?!?!? Are we expected to "Just Serve?!?" I dunTHINKso!!!

Now just calm down. I believe you. Take a deep breath and put those exclamation points away before you get us all killed. We all know how relatively inexperienced you are with them. ;)

Hmmph. My old comment is back, sitting there like it never went away. And I poked myself in the eye with one of those damn exclamation points. I knew there was a good reason I hate them. :P

I do. I'm not sure how I made it this long without knowing this about lighthouses, but I'm ignorant no more!

Thank you! It's moments like these that make up for the times I'm pulling my hair out over something he says or does. I think Bill Cosby was right when he said of kids,"That's why God made them cute: so you don't kill them."
