When I am traveling with my 5 year-old-son, Sweet Pea, and listening to music, it has been requested that I limit the music to bands that "rock out." He is not into easy listening, folk, new age, classical, jazz, country, folk or any of that other stuff I like. He only likes rock and roll.
Last night we were listening to the song Jenny Says by Cowboy Mouth and Sweet Pea was listening closely to the lyrics.
"I guess they’re leaving," he said.
"Why do you think that?" I asked him.
"Listen," he said.
"See?" Sweet Pea asked, "They’re turning off the radio, the lights, and the videos. They must be leaving."
"Hmm," I said, "You’re right. That’s the only thing that makes sense. They must be going somewhere, or else why would they turn everything off?"
At least we were able to come to a satisfying conclusion this time. Last time we heard the song, he wanted to know who Jenny was and why she was bossing them around. When I told him she was just some girl I didn’t know, he got irritated because he counts on me to have all the answers. Now we have figured why she was telling them what to do: they are leaving. If Jenny doesn't make sure the radio, lights, and video are all turned off, the guys will just leaving everything on and waste electricity because that's how guys are.
Next time he asks me, I’ll tell him that I think Jenny must be their mom.

Jenny says turn off the radio;
Jenny says turn off the light;
Jenny says turn off the video;
You beat yourself up to bring yourself down!
Let it go, let it go, let it go!
Let it go, let it go, let it go!
When the world keeps coming down on me,
I let it go!
"See?" Sweet Pea asked, "They’re turning off the radio, the lights, and the videos. They must be leaving."

Date: 2010-05-11 10:05 pm (UTC)There are SO many variations of that. "What's in the truck, Mommy?" "Mommy doesn't know." "But why won't you tell me. What's in it? Is it candy, Mommy?" and on and on and on.
I know what you mean about these kind of conversations! :P

Plus, the dude playing the drums is crazy. I like that in a drummer.
I introduced my kids to funk by way of Wild Cherry, then some Ohio Players, so now they will say "Dad, we want to rock out" or "Dad, we want to kick out the funk."
I love my kids.
