I just checked the mail, and in it found a letter from the Texas Workforce Commission. I opened it with a feeling of dread.

I had to read it three times before it sunk in.

My unemployment claim has been accepted. Reason for decision: "Our investigation found that your employer discharged you from your last work for a reason that is not misconduct connected with the work."

I checked the balance of my state-issued debit card just to confirm that, yes, there is money in there and I can buy groceries.

Sweet!

No question mark needed. I've got $1500 that I didn't have last week. Yes, congratulations to me!

Yeah, that's why I like CT. They have an "at will" policy and can fire you for any reason they see fit so long as it's not discriminatory.

While that sounds like it sucks, that also means they can't refuse unemployment unless they can prove that you've done something that's broken a law. :)

When I asked the HR lady (who for some reason was having a very hard time looking me in the eye, and one of her own eyes kept twitching) about unemployment, she said, "We always encourage everyone to apply, but you'll probably be denied."

For something people are "always encouraged" to do, it sounded pretty discouraging to me.

All right! I hope the state decides to investigate why so many Big Death employees have suddenly been terminated...

It's more like a slow culling of the heard, the way they are doing it. I'm not sure of the rhyme or reason, or even if the department managers are being told, "Get rid of X number of people by what ever means necessary so we don't have to pay their claims if it can be helped." I kind of suspect that, but it would be hard to prove.

Congrats! How'd that happen? I'd like to see the details with that since I was fired due to "misconduct" with being late (well within their 14 minute so-called policy) and was denied unemployment.

I was fired for using the phrase, "Oh, damnit, I messed up..." in an email. Unprofessional conduct. Mind you I've heard far courser language in the halls of that building, but those people had the good sense to be men when they said those words. Bad words are so much worse when spoken (or typed) by a woman.

YAY! Enjoy it. Be aware though that you will have to pay taxes on it. You can have them deduct it now, or you can pay it later.

Yeah, I've been on unemployment before. In fact, they told me since they'd send me the debit card 2 years ago that I'd better find it because I was expected to use it again. I have them deduct the 10% for taxes, but it's never quite enough in the past.

This might be the first time I've ever been excited for someone to get an unemployment check. Congrats! :D

Hehe, feel free to take it, if you like. (Or any others of mine - I collect funny text icons.) :)

You're only excited to get unemployment when you've been scared into thinking you might not get it. It's not much money, but something is always better than nothing.

Thanks!
