We were getting out of the car last night, my 4 year old and I, when I happened to glance up and catch sight of the moon. I pointed it out to him.

"Look, you can only see half of it tonight."

"But where did the other part go?" he asked, perplexed.

"You just can't see it right now."

He thought for a moment. "I think someone cut it and took the other part."

"They stole half the moon?"

"Yup."

"Uh, oh. I hope they bring it back."

"Yeah, they better bring it back or they're going to be in a lot of trouble."

"Because you just can't go around stealing the moon, can you?"

"Nope," he agreed, "You just can't."

You should ask him where does the sun go at night...I'd be curious as to how he'd explain it...

I need to try that. I'll get back to you.

I got into an argument with him about the earth once. He saw a picture of our planet, and points out that it is "our earth." When I agreed that we live on the earth, he looked at me incredulously and said, "No, we live in our earth, Mommy." The idea of living on a ball seemed too bizarre to him.

It's so funny/cute how young children relate everything to a morality tale. Rorie does that all the time! Her answer for anything that's no longer where she thinks it should be is, "somebody STOLD it!"

Perhaps our kids are in trouble so much that they just assume that if something is not right, someone broke a rule. They point out the infraction so we don't think that they are the ones who, for example, cut the moon in half and ran off with part of it.

Knowing our kids, they'd probably figure out a way to do it, too!

Well, first you need to find a really BIG pair of scissors...

I always knew that there was more to this moon thing than what the astronomy books were telling me.

What do books know? You have to figure this stuff out for yourself, using logic and reason. Half the moon is missing? The only logical explanation is that SOMEONE TOOK IT.

It's funny, half the time they have you pulling your hair out, and then the other half they leave you grinning like a fool. :)

How cute is that??? Camie used to be convinced that the sun and moon were the same thing. Until we pointed out that sometimes you can see both in the sky at once...

Well, they are both round, and they both show up in the sky. Of course, the moon must the the sun when it's turned off in the evening. Makes sense to me!
