Back in November, I shot this little video of my son, who had turned his overturned bicycle into a machine to crush soda cans so they could be recycled, and to crush pinecones just because crushing pinecones is fun. Here he is explaining how his device works.

Mind you, this is just one of many machines my son has invented and built. His other engineering triumph was the "honey making machine" he created out of Legos (because "the bees can't make enough honey by themselves"). That machine, which I failed to document before it was disassembled and the pieces were turned into an airplane, would hum and then make a noise that sounded like "hunnyhunnyhunnyhunny" before producing what looked like approximately 1 once of honey that was immediately consumed by the inventor.

In due time. The most basic erector sets are for ages 5 and up, and I don't think he has the eye-hand coordination to work with them yet. Until then, he has to make do with Tinker Toys and Kid K'nex. :)

I started watching and was waiting for the can to be crushed. I was anticipating his sheer genius. It didn't happen; however what did happen is the realization of his awesome inventiveness. Imagination is a bejillion times more powerful than if he had actually crushed a can.

Not to mention -- he's absolutely adorable. Looking forward to more inventions.

You will happy to know his rates are quite reasonable; he works for snacks and the chance to watch Scooby Doo videos.

At the tender age of 4, he's already showing his skill as an engineer. I told you that he has a future in bending the world to suit his needs!!!

BTW, thank you for the Christmas card/newsletter. As I read about the house, I laughed. In the aftermath of Ike, I'm currently harboring many of the same thoughts/feelings.

It's in his DNA. On my side, his grandfather and uncle are civil engineers, one great grandfather was was a carpenter, and a great great grandfather was a mechanic (of whatever sort of machines needed maintaining around 1900). His father maintains airplanes, and his grandfather maintained those big IBM computers that used to fill up entire rooms back in the day. It's no surprise that building things and making machines work kind of comes natural to him.

Glad you liked the No-Good-News-Letter. I'm a cheap gift giver, so I try to hand out a little laughter every year and hope people accept it as all they're getting from me. :)

It is, isn't it? Playing, creating and learning is their job at this stage in life, and I love watching them work. :)
