Just as I worried would happen, I slept through the storm. I hate it when exciting things happen in the wee morning, when my rather rigid circadian rhythm dictates that I be unconscious. So I slept through the tree being uprooted in my front yard and missing the room that I slept in by inches, and I missed the tree that split in half and landed on the roof, leaving 4 holes that are making damp spots on the ceiling where I sit typing right now.

We lost power early, a good 5 hours before landfall, on when the pre-hurricane winds caused falling tree limbs to knock down the power lines. Our generator is giving us power to run the refrigerator, a few rooms, and the computer, so we aren't roughing it completely. The eye moved east and missed us by a few miles, so we didn't get the worst of the storm like we feared. (I'll post some photos later.)

My almost 4-year-old son looked out the front door and asked, "How we going to get out?" because of the downed tree and all the fallen branches. I told him maybe Daddy could move some of the stuff.

"We need to buy a crane," my son said, "We could use that to move the trees."

"Good idea," I said, "Jeff, put a crane on the shopping list."

Rather than wait for he roads (and our credit) to clear so we can buy a crane, he's on the roof with a chainsaw right now, trying to remove enough of the tree to cover up the holes with a tarp.

We're safe and sound, just a bit soggy and (if the generator goes out) in the dark.

Glad you guys are safe!! I hope the roof damage isn't too bad.

And yes, a crane. My husband wouldn't know what to do with himself because he'd be so excited.

The roof has 4 golf-ball sized holes in it, and one lose shingle that we can find. As for the crane thing, I think guys are equally as fascinated by such things at the age of 4, or 40, or 80. Funny how that works.

I've been a huge weather nerd, following Hurricane Ike.

I stayed up until midnight, watching CNN/The Weather Channel/Houston Channel 11, and I was also watching live streaming from various storm chasers online, as well as viewer videos.

I'm really glad you're OK. I'm still waiting to hear how Galveston Island fared, now that it's light out. Guess we'll find out once the winds have died down enough to the point where the helicopters can do a fly-over to assess the damage. Sounds like Houston is fine, if not a bit messy and wet and moderately damaged. Those idiots who chose to remain on Galveston Island, though... *sighs*

The cable is out, but Jeff rigged up an antenna and we are able to pull in the ABC affiliate (channel 13). I am 125 miles inland from Galveston and on the clean side of the storm, so I'm sure the island is a mess.

Anyone living in a storm surge area who decided to ride this thing out was a fool. Darwin award material, the whole lot of them. :P

Quite glad you're all right.

BTW my husband works for a crane company. He gets to climb on cranes :)

My son would be SO VERY impressed! He's pretty impressed that his own father works on airplanes. Some jobs are just naturally cool to a little boy. :)

Glad to hear you fared the storm relatively well. Sorry to hear about the damage, and I hope your power gets restored quickly. I, too, am keeping tabs on the aftermath of the storm, for several reasons. Waiting to hear from my inlaws, to see how they fared.

For a storm of this magnitude, there are very few reports of carnage so far. Hope your in-laws are well.

SO GLAD you are all ok!!!!

(relieved)

(now joking) hey, at least you have the computer, you're good;)

I hope the repairs so well..

Thank you!

Jeff got the roof tarped off before the rain even stopped. We'll get the insurance adjuster out to make sure there is no hidden damage, and then make a plan about getting it fixed. In the upcoming weeks, the sounds of hammers and roof repairs are going to resonate through the neighborhood, not to mention the whole region.

The phone (and thus for me, the Internet) are intact, so as long as I have gas for the generator I can get online. Life if bearable, if not exactly great right now. Houston without any AC is going to be a bit rough.

Oh, a crane is a good idea, though! There's probably a lot of work for crane operators right now... Of course, you and your husband already have jobs, and child labor being illegal and all, the crane might not pay for itself in record time, after all.

Seriously, I'm glad to hear you're okay!

Well, Jeff used a chainsaw and his bare hands to get the tree off of the roof, so we may not need a crane after all. Of course he threw it all down onto the front porch, so I can't get in or out of my front door. :P

Thank you!

Warning: you might not want to hug me today -- I'm a bit sticky from not having any air conditioner, and haven't showered since we lost water pressure after the storm. I'm spot cleaning with a damp wash cloth and layering on the deodorant, but that's the best I can do under the circumstances. Still, I'm not exactly feeling as fresh as a daisy... ;P

Thanks for the warning. But at least with virtual hugs, I don't have to SMELL you. :P

Hug me today, instead. I went to my brother in law's and took a shower. I'm human again! ^_^
