I was out running errands last weekend with my 5 year old in tow, and to make the outing something he could look forward to I asked him if he would like to get some ice cream. He responded with an enthusiastic “yes.”

The way to the ice cream parlor was a full 7 miles though, which he thought was unbearably far.

“I wish we had a button in the car that said ice cream,” he said from the backseat (when we were still about 3.5 miles from our destination).

I asked him why he wanted such a button in the car.

“Because then we could push it and teleport there,” he said.

Of all the options available in cars – cruise control, GPS, OnStar, and automatic everything – it’s a damn shame that automakers have not come up with a button to teleport you directly to an ice cream parlor. Obviously, they are not hiring enough 5 year olds to work in their product development departments.

You can't swing a dead cat in our neighborhood without hitting an ice cream truck. Maybe that's why product development hasn't come up with a teleportation-to-ice-cream button.

I live in an old subdivision with more retirees than kiddos (we have some, just not a lot). No ice cream trucks anywhere.

It's surprising the drivers aren't too freaked out to drive in your neighborhood at all, with people standing on their lawns swinging around dead cats like that. I guess in Austin people are just used to weird stuff like that.

I vote for that button. And one for iced tea too!

Maybe I'll look into both of those options on my next car.
